“Mifgashei HaLev” (Hebrew for “meeting of the hearts”) opens new horizons for at-risk youth through cooking and baking courses. Alienated teens achieve new skills and many advance in the culinary arts in their Israel Defense Forces service.
Mifgashei HaLev, also known as "Rendezvous Jerusalem") was founded in 1993 to respond to the needs of economically and socially distressed families in Jerusalem. In recent years, Mifgashei HaLev has focused its work on advancing the successful short courses in cooking and baking it offers to troubled youth throughout the city. Hundreds of alienated teens from diverse backgrounds (native Israelis and new immigrants) have discovered their personal potential, built their self-esteem, gained practical skills and improved their relationships with their parents, schools and the community at large. Teens are referred to the courses by Jerusalem's social service authorities and learn from accredited chefs at a renovated facility with professional kitchens. There is a reception area with dining tables where the teens demonstrate and share their culinary achievements. New pilot courses are adapting the program to enrich special needs teens and young adults.
